Warhammer is a miniatures hobby made by Games Workshop: you build plastic models, paint them, and play tabletop games with them. This guide explains the main game systems, what a starter set contains, and the basic paints and tools, with links to what Kidify stocks.
Two game systems: Warhammer 40,000 and Age of Sigmar
Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer Age of Sigmar are two different game systems by Games Workshop. Warhammer 40,000 has a science-fiction setting, and Age of Sigmar has a fantasy setting. Each has its own armies, models and rules, so a 40,000 army and an Age of Sigmar army are not used in the same game.
Both systems also have smaller formats. Our listings describe Kill Team as Warhammer 40,000's fast skirmish game, and Spearhead as the fast-playing format of Age of Sigmar.
What is an introductory or starter set?
A starter set is a box that gives you models and rules to begin with. For example, our listing for the Age of Sigmar Introductory Set (English) describes a beginner's box with two small forces and the rules to start playing. The Kill Team Starter Set (English) contains two kill teams to build and the rules to start playing.
These sets are supplied unassembled and unpainted, and glue, paints and tools are sold separately. If you would rather start with a set that includes paints, the Age of Sigmar Paints + Tools Set contains miniatures, Citadel paints and tools; note that its instructions are in Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Polish and Scandinavian languages. There is also the Getting Started with Age of Sigmar book in English.
Paints: what the types mean
Citadel paints are grouped by type, and the type is printed in each product name:
- Base paints are opaque colours used for the first coat. Ours come in 12ml pots, for example Macragge Blue, Abaddon Black and Leadbelcher.
- Layer paints are used over a base coat to build up colour and highlights, for example Kislev Flesh (12ml).
- Shade paints are thin washes that run into recesses, for example Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthshade (18ml).
- Contrast paints are applied over a light undercoat to give colour and shading in one coat, for example Blood Angels Red and Skeleton Horde (18ml).
- Technical and Dry paints are for special effects and drybrushing, for example Stirland Mud (24ml) and Necron Compound (12ml).
Many painters spray an undercoat first, such as Chaos Black spray.
Brushes, glue and tools
- Brushes: Small Base Brush, Small Layer Brush and Medium Layer Brush.
- Glue: Plastic Glue (15g) for plastic kits.
- Tools: the Warhammer Colour Tool Set for clipping, cleaning and building plastic miniatures, and the Painting Handle (Mk3) for holding a model while you paint.
