What is Warhammer Tone Pro?
Tone Pro is a range of 12ml paints from Games Workshop. Instead of single colours, it comes in colour families. Each family has five paints that step from dark to light:
| Tone | What it is |
|---|---|
| 1 | Darkest |
| 2 | Dark |
| 3 | Middle |
| 4 | Light |
| 5 | Lightest |
The five tones of one family are meant to sit together on the same part of a model, so you don't have to work out which separate colours match.
There are also two 18ml mediums made for the range. Shading Medium turns a Tone Pro paint into a shade or glaze, and Blending Medium is for blending Tone Pro paints.
How do I use five tones on one model?
A simple way to start, using Ultramar Blue armour as the example:
- Base with the middle tone. Paint the whole area in Ultramar Blue 3.
- Darken the recesses. Add Ultramar Blue 1 or Tone 2 into the gaps and the undersides, where shadow would fall.
- Lighten the raised parts. Pick out edges and upper surfaces with Tone 4, then a few small highlights in Ultramar Blue 5.
You don't need all five on day one. Tones 1, 3 and 5 already give a clear dark, middle and light. Add 2 and 4 later to smooth the steps.
